Happy Christmas

I know that this has nothing to do with Halloween, but I didn't think you would object to this seasonal greeting!

Halloween Cards Revisited 3

This is the third and final post where I am updating my reviews of halloween cards.

In Flash Halloween Cards I reviewed cards from Halloween4u.com All the old favorites are still there plus a few new ones too. Here are three I picked out:

Fightful Fun has all the elements - a black cat, ghost and swooping bat with giant fangs plus a skeletal accompanist on the drums.

The Monster Shoot Game is a big hit, but has little to do with halloween.

However Knock on the Door of Evil is a real halloween monster with skulls and ghosties a plenty.

The site I quoted for Collectors' Halloween Cards is now all into sci fi and UFOs, but I've found another at Retrocrush. Here you will find "the recipe for catching a man - With a goose wishbone and four pumpkin seeds marked with letters love, On Halloween place over door…and he who first passes under, your future husband is to be – if he don’t blunder".

Well that completes my update of the halloween card sites that I reviewed back in 2006. It's good to find that most are still in business and that there are some interesting additions to their collections. If you have any particular favorites please leave a comment with the details.

Halloween Cards Revisited 2

Now for the next group of halloween cards. In my post Light Halloween Cards I described this group as just plain cartoons with a punchline. They are still the same as you can see here, but there is another section of halloween ecards on this site. There is a large selection including animated cards, but the quality is not great.

In Scary Halloween Cards I reviewed cards from Funegreets.com As I said these cards are meant for a more mature audience, so you may find some of them rather too strong for your taste.

In Funny Halloween Cards I looked at the collection from Funny-eCards.com These appear to be the same as before, so my previous comments are still relevant.

Halloween Cards Revisited

Wow - is it really three years since I created this blog? It's about time I updated the Halloween Card reviews so here is what I've found.

Encardia seems to have exactly the same selection of cards as before, so you can see my comments at the original post here.

Bloom by AG have moved and are now part of American Greetings.com. They only seem to have two halloween cards. "Release your inner bitch" which I mentioned in the previous post and "Classic & refined . . . but it's the wicked inside that counts" which is not particularly inspiring.

Birthday Alarm.com have nearly doubled their selection of halloween cards. There are now five categories - Funny, Cute, Interactive, Spooky and Elegant plus party invites. As in my previous post I think the Interactive are the most fun and they now rate "Candy Game" as the most popular.

In the Funny section two new offerings are "Rockabilly Halloween" which is lively and fun as opposed to "Headless Norseman" a rather boring joke.

In the Spooky category "Fright Night" is apparently the most popular, but the new "Scary Halloween" certainly lives up to its name.

That's enough for now. I'll revisit the others in my next post.

Organizing Your Halloween Party

Halloween is a fun holiday that begs for having a creepy
costume party. But getting such an event together requires
some planning and organizing.

First Things First
Step one in organizing your Halloween party is deciding
what kind of party you are going to have. Are you going to
have a themed party or just a fun bash? Is it going to be a
potluck or are you going to try to do it all yourself?
Hint: Trying to do it all yourself not such a great idea.
It makes your life a whole lot easier and allows you to
have more fun if it is a potluck. Believe it or not, it can
also make it more fun for your guests. Some fun potluck
ideas: Have everyone bring the most disgusting looking or
sounding dish that they can find. However, make sure that
they know it must be edible! If you’re doing a themed
party, have everyone bring something in keeping with the
theme. For example, for a pirate party, have everyone bring
a dish that has a skull and crossbones in it or on it.

So first decide what kind of Halloween party you are going
to organize and how you are going to handle the food.

Make a List
Step two in organizing your Halloween party is making a
list of everything that needs to get done. Just sit down
and brainstorm everything that you can think of. Then go
back over your list and figure out the order of what needs
to get done. For example, sending out invitations should be
one of the first things on your list. Organizing and buying
decorations should also be near the top. Getting food ready
will be at or near the end of the list. Then go back
through that list one more time and organize it one step
further by figuring out roughly how long each task will
take you. Hint: It is better to overestimate the time it
will take you than to underestimate.

Get Ready Before The Day
Okay, so this is more of a tip than a step in getting your
Halloween party organized. But it is important so bear with
me. In order to minimize your stress and to make the party
more fun for you, get as much as possible organized before
the actual day of the party. This includes making as much
of the food as you can before the day of the party. If you
can make it and freeze it, by all means, do it. This also
means cleaning whatever areas of your house you feel need
to be cleaned beforehand. A few more things you can do
before the day of the party: wash dishes, decorate, setup
tables and put out anything non-perishable the night before.

And the most important tip of all: Have FUN!

Happy Halloween!

Pumpkin Festival Canceled

That's not the sort of headline you want to see at the beginning of October with Halloween fast approaching. But this is what has happened in the small village of Michelmersh in Hampshire, England. The festival was started 39 years ago by the landlord of the Bear and Ragged Staff pub in Michelmersh and this is the first time that it has been canceled.

Because of the poor summer weather and unusually heavy rainfall this year which caused major flooding in some parts of the country it seems that the pumpkins have not grown properly. So with no worthwhile specimens to display the organizers of the annual show were left with no other choice than to call off the event.

Club member Jenny Gale said "Because of the bad summer weather and the cold nights we don't have any really good pumpkins to show this year. For some reason they just aren't growing properly. Hopefully next year things will have returned to normal and we will be able to hold the show again".

Safety First - Tips for a Safer Halloween

I know it's too late for this year but here are some safety tips
from guest author Peter Koonz:

Halloween is quite possibly one of the most interesting, fun,
and magical holidays we celebrate. There are so many things
about the holiday that are still very mysterious and enchanting.
Among those mysteries, sadly, is why there are people out there
who would want to do something dangerous to ruin the fun of
Halloween for others. There are many crimes reported each year
during the Halloween holiday. Among the most common are
vandalism, robbery, and assault. Others occur as well, including
some cases of drunk driving and other such preventable hazards.
However, it is very easy to prevent most of the hazards of
Halloween from affecting you and your family as you celebrate.

To begin with, one of the most important things you could do is
educate yourself and your children. The more you know about the
risks to your safety, and where they are, the better able you
will be to prevent something bad from happening. Countless
resources exist to help you make safe plans for Halloween. A
search on the internet will help you to find safety guidelines
for trick-or-treating and other Halloween events. Also, schools
usually give some pointers to children to ensure their safety.
Local law enforcement agencies will be able to provide
information as well. They will typically have the most updated
information.

Candy has gained a reputation as the most dangerous part of the
holiday. This may or may not be true. However, what is true is
that it never hurts to play it safe. So, to be safe, make sure
that your child is not accepting candy that does not appear to
be in its original wrapper. Also, make sure that the wrapper has
not been tampered with in any way. You can observe some of this
while out trick-or-treating, but you will have to spend some
time at home checking the candy further to make sure it is safe.
Make sure your child knows not to eat any of the candy before
bringing it home. Children should be accompanied by an adult.
Never let your children go out unsupervised. It's best to take
your children only to the areas you know well.

One of the most effective ways to ensure your child's safety is
simply to avoid the traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating
that once was the staple event of the holiday. Now it is much
more common to find trick-or-treating events at local malls and
at other centralized locations. This can be a great benefit, as
more effort can go into making a much smaller area fun to visit.
You avoid the potential hazards of traffic and strangers, the
risk of bad weather, and just about all of the other things that
could ruin Halloween. Consider either going to a centralized
Halloween event this year, or hosting your own Halloween party
to bring the fun where you are.

No matter where you go, you should think about the visibility of
your child. The more showy the costume, the more memorable it
will be. This is important because, no matter how careful you
are, a child can easily become lost. The more obvious they are,
the better. One very good costume idea for girls is to dress
your child in a fairy costume. These attractive costumes are
available in many bright colors and will guarantee that you
child is noticeable. Fun and functional, you can find an
excellent selection of these costumes. Remember, this is
potentially one of the most dangerous holidays for strictly
preventable reasons. Have fun and be safe on this Halloween!
